Description

Herb Valley Herbal and Mineral Diuretic tablets provide a balanced formula to give effective relief from fluid retention while at the same time helping to reduce the loss of important water soluble minerals.

A diuretic (‘fluid tablet’) is any drug that increases the natural rate at which the body loses water through the kidneys as urine (diuresis).

Diuretics are of value where this natural rate of fluid loss is reduced leading to fluid retention. A person usually notices this as puffiness, typically of the lower extremities (the feet and ankles).

There are many causes of fluid retention and most of these are transient in nature. Menstrual cycles, prolonged periods of inactivity (like bus and air travel), standing for long periods, unusual amounts of physical activity and minor tissue damage are all possible causes of brief periods of fluid retention which can be both uncomfortable and unsightly.

In most cases episodes like these can be relieved safely and effectively by the use of Herb Valley’s Herbal and Mineral Diuretic’s special formula.

Prolonged episodes of fluid retention from such things as poor circulation, kidney and heart disease require medical attention to help get to the underlying causes and may require more specialised treatments.

Our Herbal and Mineral Diuretic tablets provide a balanced formula to give effective relief from fluid retention while at the same time helping to reduce the loss of important water soluble minerals which can be a real problem with more potent prescription diuretics.

Dandelion

The dandelion plant is a well known diuretic, having been listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia for many years.

The whole plants, especially the leaf, contain aesculin which improves small blood vessel function, helping to reduce the permeability of the capillary wall which allows fluid to escape from the circulation and to accumulate in body tissue.

In addition it contains a number of sterols, one of which (sitosterol) has other anti-inflammatory effects.

Dandelion also has a direct diuretic action by inhibiting the re-absorption of sodium in the kidney. The kidney then ‘loses’ water along with the sodium leading to a decreased fluid reservoir in the body.

The mild laxative effect that the plant has on the digestive tract is another way in which the dandelion helps promote natural water loss.

Uvi Ursi

Uva Ursi (also known as Bearberry) has been traditionally used as a urinary antiseptic. Reports exist of the Chinese using this plant as a diuretic and to treat kidney and urinary problems from the 13th century and Bearberry leaves are still used medicinally in Poland and other countries.

Uva Ursi also acts directly on the kidneys to exert a mild diuretic effect by increasing renal circulation and stimulating renal tubular function.

Research indicates that Uva Ursi works best in an alkaline pH for treatment of urinary tract infections. The leaves contain arbutin, an antiseptic that is hydrolysed in gastric fluid to hydroquinone. In alkaline urine, hydroquinone is an effective antimicrobial agent and Uva Ursi itself tends to alkalinise the urine. Arbutin also contributes to the antiseptic activity in the urinary tract. Consumption of this herb may give urine a slight greenish tinge.

Juniper Berries

Juniper berries are a well known diuretic, having been listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia for many years.

Juniper acts on the glomerulus of the kidney to increase blood flow and the filtration rate leading to greater water loss. It appears that this does not involve the loss of significant levels of sodium so it is unlikely to be of much benefit in longer term treatment of hypertension. In addition it has some urinary antiseptic properties.

It has a long history of use in chronic bladder and kidney infections; renal congestion, menstrual cycle irregularities and helping to relieve inflammation of gout, arthritis and some other diseases.

Garlic

Garlic has many beneficial actions in the body and is included here for its diuretic and natriuretic (loss of sodium) actions. The latter therefore acts synergistically with Juniper to improve the level of sodium and water loss.

Buchu

Buchu has traditionally been used as a urinary antiseptic, for stimulating urine flow and helping to promote the loss of uric acid. It is also a tonifying herb for atonic conditions of the bladder.

Potassium

Potassium is an essential mineral assisting in normal muscle function, nerve impulse transmission and electrolyte balance within the body. Potassium is also important in releasing energy from fat and carbohydrate metabolism.

Many diuretics cause an excessive loss of potassium via the urine because it is water soluble. Additional losses are common in bouts of prolonged diarrhoea or vomiting.

People taking diuretics should take care to maintain adequate potassium levels to avoid dangerously low levels (hypokalaemia) which can give rise to muscle weakness, heart rhythm disturbances and respiratory problems.

Eating a variety of foods that contain potassium is the best way to get an adequate intake. Such foods include bananas, avocados and most fruit and vegetables.

Our Herbal and Mineral Diuretic formula provides an additional amount of potassium to make sure that dietary sources are supplemented.

Lecithin

Lecithin is naturally derived from soybeans and may assist in the distribution, assimilation and emulsification of fats in the digestive system. Naturally extracted it is a mixture of Phosphatides rich in choline and inositol.

A major role of Lecithin is to assist fat metabolism by allowing fats to be effectively digested by the body, preventing fats from accumulating in certain organs and facilitating the movement of fats into cells.

Phospholipids are considered essential nutrients for proper functioning of the human body and in particular for normal liver function.

Although it is a fatty substance, it is also a fat emulsifier. Hence, it supports the circulatory system. Its choline is useful for making acetylcholine. Hence, it also supports the circulatory system by preventing fatty build-up in the arteries and vital organs.

Lecithin promotes the elimination of wastes and may aid in the treatment of constipation, especially if due to poor fat metabolism. Lecithin helps to maintain healthy digestive function especially the liver.

The diuretic properties of our product may also cause some weight loss in certain individuals. Being overweight, rapid weight loss and cycling (dieting and putting on weight again) causes the liver to over-produce cholesterol which is delivered into the bile and causes it to be supersaturated; thus increasing the risk for gallstones. Due to its natural emulsification properties, Lecithin is added into our product to reduce the risk of gallstone formation.

Caution

Dandelion is contraindicated in bile duct obstruction, acute gall bladder inflammation, acute gastrointestinal inflammation, intestinal blockage or if you have ever had an allergy to dandelion.

Uvi Ursi should not be used in pregnancy because of its oxytocic properties. Ingestion of this herb by individuals with sensitive stomachs may experience nausea and vomiting. Toxic doses can cause tinnitus, difficulty with breathing, convulsions and loss of consciousness. Arbutin has been shown to inhibit the degredation of insulin and may be problematic for those with hypoglycaemia.

Animal study evidence would indicate that Juniper should be avoided in pregnancy or other conditions where stimulation of the uterus would be inadvisable. It should also not be used in anyone with an allergy to any part of the juniper plant.

Garlic may cause gastrointestinal disturbance in sensitive individuals. It contraindicated if dehydration or diabetes are present. prior to surgery, when on anticoagulant therapy or if a recipient of an organ transplant. Large amounts can decrease the uptake of iodine by the thyroid gland.
