Description

Kelp, also known as brown seaweed, is a rich, organic source of many vitamins and minerals. One of these, Iodine, is a vital component of the thyroid hormones your body produces to regulate growth and development.

Concern is growing over a re-emerging trend in Australia towards iodine deficiency states. Dietary sources are often insufficient because Australia has relatively impoverished soils. The move away from iodine based sanitisers in the dairy industry, fewer people cooking with iodised salt and the fact that 90% of dietary intake is eventually lost through the urine all point towards an increased need for supplementation in some people.

Herb Valley Kelp 1000mg are a convenient way of making sure that dietary intake is adequate.

Long term Iodine deficiency can lead to swelling of the thyroid gland (goitre), as well as symptoms of an under-active thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypothyroidism throughout the world. Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

  • Tiredness
  • Slow heart rate
  • Dry Skin
  • Muscle and joint aches and pains
  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Weight Gain

Herb Valley Kelp 1000 tablets contain the species Fucus vesiculosus commonly known as Bladder wrack. This is an excellent dietary source of iodine; in fact Bladder Wrack was the original source of iodine, discovered in 1812.

Low intake of dietary iodine is the major cause of iodine deficiency in the community and, which is a major health concern in most countries.

Iodine deficiency can result in a series of iodine deficiency disorders. These can affect people of all ages, but babies are most at risk of serious problems.

Babies who do not receive adequate iodine can have intellectual impairment and problems with physical development. Sometimes, severe mental retardation (known as cretinism) develops following severe iodine deficiency during early development. In fact, iodine deficiency is the most common cause worldwide of preventable intellectual impairment in children, so it’s extremely important for pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers and young children to receive an adequate amount of dietary iodine.

It has been reported that at least 50 per cent of pregnant women in Australia have an inadequate intake of iodine. Several studies have also found mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency in school-aged children and adults in Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria.
